As the employment law landscape continues to evolve, businesses are increasingly needing advice that is not only technically sound, but clear, practical and easy to apply.
Shae Holman, Focus HR’s Head of Employee & Industrial Relations, brings deep technical expertise combined with a modern, solutions-focused approach—helping clients navigate complex workplace matters with confidence.
We spoke with Shae about her approach to industrial relations and translating complexity into practical outcomes for clients.
What’s a moment in your career that shaped how you approach HR?
I’ve been fortunate in my career to progress quickly by grabbing every opportunity presented to me with both hands and working on some extremely complex matters within large-scale enterprise environments. Those experiences have shaped how I approach industrial relations and the value that I bring to clients.
What kind of impact do you want to have in your role here?
In my role at FHR, my goal is to bring a fresh, modern perspective to what is often seen as a dry and challenging jurisdiction. I’m passionate about using the skills I’ve developed to provide clear, practical advice that helps business owners confidently navigate the employment law landscape.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give a business owner managing staff?
From my experience, managing employees is one of the more challenging aspects of running a business. My advice to business owners is to trust your strategic partners and seek guidance early. While I pride myself on being able to find answers to even the most complex questions, getting support early always leads to better, more manageable outcomes.
What is your prediction for what we will look back on 2026 for in the business world?
Looking ahead, I believe business owners will need to remain agile as the employment law landscape continues to evolve. We’re already seeing landmark decisions and regulatory changes that are first of their kind in this jurisdiction. Staying proactive and on the front foot will be essential to successfully navigate these complexities moving forward.
What type of workplace challenges do you enjoy helping clients solve?
When it comes to workplace challenges, I enjoy solving problems that are complex and multi-faceted. As an employment law specialist, these matters can often feel overwhelming and, at times, without a clear path forward. I take a modern, agile approach, focusing on practical, solutions-driven outcomes that help bring clarity and direction.
What do you want our clients to know about you?
I’m a passionate employment law specialist with experience across large organisations, including Virgin Australia and Airbus Australia Pacific. At heart, though, I’m a country girl—I spend my weekends in the paddock, chasing cattle on my horses and riding motorbikes. I have a deep passion for agriculture and the bush, and I genuinely value the opportunity to work in this space, bringing together both of my worlds. This connection allows me to make a meaningful impact in businesses that support rural communities, as I understand firsthand the unique challenges and complexities faced within these industries.
