In today’s environment, HR advice needs to be more than technically correct – it needs to be practical, timely and grounded in the realities of running a business.
Karla Barrett, Focus HR’s Head of HR – Advisory Services, brings a perspective shaped by experience on both sides of the table – understanding first hand what business owners and managers need when navigating complex workplace challenges.
We sat down with Karla to learn more about what shapes her approach to HR and supporting our clients.
What’s a moment in your career that shaped how you approach HR?
Having spent much of my pre-HR career as a people leader, I’ve navigated a number of complex employee matters where I needed HR support. At times, that support didn’t quite provide the clarity or confidence I was looking for, particularly around process and decision-making. That experience really shaped my approach to HR. It’s what drove my passion to be the person on the other end of the problem – someone leaders, business owners and executives can rely on when things are challenging. I focus on providing clear, practical guidance with empathy, grounded in facts and an understanding of risk, so clients feel confident in navigating each unique situation.
What kind of impact do you want to have in your role here?
I aim to be a trusted and reliable strategic partner for both our clients and our team. We spend a significant portion of our lives at work, so it’s important that it feels purposeful and rewarding. I want the work we do to create positive, meaningful outcomes for our clients, their people and our team.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give a business owner managing staff?
There’s rarely a one size fits all approach when it comes to people. Every situation is different and every individual brings their own experiences, values and perspectives. Taking the time to understand the context and approaching each matter on its own merits will always lead to better outcomes.
What is your prediction for what we will look back on 2026 for in the business world?
I think 2026 will be remembered as a year of investment in possibility, particularly in technology. The pace of change in AI has been remarkable and I expect by the end of the year we’ll see it more seamlessly integrated into everyday business operations.
What type of workplace challenges do you enjoy helping clients solve?
I genuinely enjoy problem solving, particularly when it involves working through complex or sensitive situations. Supporting clients to navigate difficult challenges and seeing those situations turn into positive, constructive outcomes is incredibly rewarding.
What do you want our clients to know about you?
I’ve always believed that the success of any organisation is driven not just by its strategy, but by its people. In my role, I’m focused on helping clients navigate the complexities of HR and employee relations in a way that builds strong, sustainable workplace cultures. Outside of work, I enjoy making the most of our beautiful region and enjoying weekend adventures with my family. I’m really looking forward to connecting with our clients and working together to create meaningful progress.
