Every business leader serious about running a thriving business needs to give attention, focus and time to nurturing their strategic plan.
To win in business today, you’ll need a plan… A plan your team knows and can implement effectively.
At Focus HR, our own strategy journey has taught us that the key to success in strategic planning and implementation is identifying your own definition of a thriving business.
It could be a boutique business, being able to hand pick the clients you work with and purposely staying small; or it could be a business that grows to be Australia wide, dominating the market.
Strategy is not always about growth. It’s not always about significant change. It is however, always about the better allocation of your limited resources. The resources an organisation has include its: people and talent, time, cash, energy, assets and technology.
It doesn’t matter if you are a small team of 5 or large enterprise of 500; turning over $100K or $100M; everyone needs strategy. A clearly identify and articulated vision, purpose and goals empowers owners to align their team and maintain a laser-like focus on the things that matter.
As the late Stephen Covey said: “The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”
Owners who are effective at strategic thinking and implementation planning create an environment where everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Focus HR’s approach to strategy is built as a cascading framework.
At the base of our cascading strategic framework, we have the foundations of Vision, Purpose and values. Your Vision is what you want your company to be when it grows up. Your Purpose is the reason for your company’s existence. It’s the ‘why’ behind what you do. A vivid description of the company you wish to become. Your Core Values are the guiding beliefs and principals that you live by – the handful of rules that guide yours and your teams’ decisions, attitudes, behaviours and performance.
Next we have our Moonshot goal. The Moonshot is your big 10 year stretch goal. A goal that challenges you to greatness and if realised, would make your organisation legendary. It’s a lofty goal, like Kennedy’s goal in the 60’s of putting man on the moon.
With the foundations in place and the lofty objectives set, we cascade the strategy back to an operational level to bring the plan to life an allow us to start working towards the vision and goals. This is where we need to add the planning and the detail using strategic goals, priorities and implementation plans cascading down 3 separate and distinct timeframes:
- 3 years
- 12 Months
- Quarters
Strategic planning is a process and a system. It’s not magic or mystery and having helped hundreds of SMEs with their strategy, we know that our process and system work.
We would love to chat to our about your own ‘postcard’ and how we can assist you to develop and achieve your Moonshot goal. Or take a look at our upcoming Small Business Group Strategy Workshop…
